Why I Don’t Like Anthony Kiedis

by acostill on January 24th, 2008

Disclaimer: Before people jump to conclusions, I just want to say that I like the Chili Peppers. They were the first band that I saw live, and they have sick musicians in the band. However, I just don’t care for Anthony Kiedis, I don’t loathe him or anything, I just think he’s not all that great…as an artist or person.

4. He’s not that great of a singer. Ok, his voice is way more listenable then to someone like Billy Corgan and it’s not awful; but compared to many other singers, Kiedis is kind of weak. I believe that most of his vocals are doctored up in the studio, which I would assume many vocalists do as well, for example, check out this live performance of “Around The World”.

3. Scar Tissue. While his autobiography was somewhat interesting, it was pretty much almost 500 pages of “this happened and then…”. It got too redundant at times. Basically, I didn’t need to read the book to know that Kiedis did lots of drugs and women.

2. Most of his lyrics are quit silly.Even the most die hard Chili Pepper fan would have to admit that most of his lyrics are silly. I know there are more to songs than lyrics, but I’m a lyric person as much as a much person, and Kiedis doesn’t do it for me sometimes. There’s a reason why he made Blender’s “40 Worst Lyricist In Rock”. Here’s a few more examples: “Don’t Forget Me”, “Hump De Bump”, “The Greeting Song” and “Sexy Mexican Maid”.

1. His feud with Mike Patton. So, this is a pretty stupid feud that was started by Kiedis, because I think someone was jealous. Anyways, the feud began back around 1990 when Kiedis saw the video for Faith No More’s “Epic” and believed that their frontman Mike Patton was ripping off his style. Almost a decade later the feud sparked up again when Patton’s other band, Mr. Bungle, had to push back the release of their album California, because the Chili Peppers were releasing Californication on the same day. Both bands were scheduled to be at the same festivals in Europe and Australia, but Kiedis had Mr. Bungle removed from the bill, since RHCP were headliners they had final say for the lineup. Of course Patton and Mr. Bungle went on the mock Kiedis during concerts, which didn’t help, but still a lame move by Kiedis. Seriously, the Chili Peppers are one the biggest bands in the world, they have nothing to fear from Mr. Bungle or Mike Patton. Kiedis just sounds a bit insecure and jealous to me.

So, that’s my little list, and let the bashing begin…

I’m sure he doesn’t take his lyrics seriously - and the Chili Peppers wouldn’t be the chili peppers without there fun, non-serious at times goofballness.

True, but when they get serious, at least with the lyrics, he comes off comical.

Well, damn! For an old man like Kiedis to get paid millions of dollars the way he is today for not even taking his job seriously makes me think I really haven’t tapped into anything useful in my own life! I would love to be given the fame and money that he gets for writing metaphors for the same topic over and over again (consider what it means to be flying away on his zephyr…).

well if i had a kick ass band and then i saw some other smaller band trying to be like me i’d get pissed to . it’s just like if someone was copying you . you’d be like what the fuck is this kid doing? same thing .

Noway, that’s definitely an insecurity. Well-composed people just don’t act that way. Furthermore, artists should understand the concept of “imitation is the greatest form of flattery,” although I personally believe Patton wasn’t ‘copying’ off of AK. But Anthony should have been a real man and just let FNM do their thing.

Isn’t an autobiography supposed to be ‘this happened, and then…’? From what I know about addiction, redundancy is sort of what addicts do: the same things over and over again.

I disagree completely. yea, alot of their earlier stuff like on mother’s milk and uplift mofo is a little ridiculous with the lyrics. but kiedis has progressed into a poet. the problem is that a lot of people dont get their songs bc they’re too deep for people to comprehend and you’re not going to get the meaning of the whole song on the first listen. As for the song Dont Forget Me, that is probably one of their best songs lyrically and instrumentally (in my opinion) and whoever wrote this obviously doesnt understand the song The song is about addiction. and if you do know the song is about addiction, than you must not understand battles with addiction…
