The Lemonheads - It’s A Shame About Ray
Can anyone really bash the simple, poppy melodies from Evan Dando and company?
Take for example the title track from 1992’s It’s A Shame About Ray. The lyrics are kind of dark (If I make it through today,
I’ll know tomorrow not to leave my feelings out on display), but the music has a little sunshine to it. With the addition of Dando’s hypnotic voice, it’s no shocker that this song was hit. It’s a safe and uncomplicated track, which is always a pleasant break from the intensity of some of the other 90’s acts.
The song and album titles were apparently influenced by two people. The first was some club owner who used to call everyone Ray, and the second was a boy in Australia, named Ray, who had some misfortune; which was bad enough for the newspaper headline “It’s A Shame About Ray”, which Dando read.
Anyways, it’s a catchy song that you’ll probably enjoy (if you already don’t).
Here’s the video, which stars some guy named Johnny Depp.
