Smells Like Alternative

Stuck on a Island

by acostill on November 3rd, 2007

This past Monday several of the music bloggers here posted a Top 10 albums to take with you on a deserted island list. Well, I wasn’t really up to speed with everyone else, but just for fun, I decided to make my own list.

To make this task easier I’ve set a few guidelines for myself, which include: I am picking albums from only the 1990’s and from artists that are in the “alternative” category. This makes sense since that’s what my blog is about!

Ok, enough jibber jabber and on with the list.

10. Dave Matthews Band - Before These Crowded Streets: This was the album that got me into DMB. Problem their darkest released album that just flows perfectly from track to track.

Must have tracks: “Don’t Drink The Water”, “The Stone”, “The Dreaming Tree”.

9. Weezer - Pinkerton: I think everyone was shocked when Weezer released this follow up to the so called Blue album. It’s a heart on your sleeve type album, that should make you cry and laugh, something that only Weezer could do.

Must have tracks: “Why Bother?”, “Across The Sea”, “Pink Triangle”.

8. Chris Cornell - Euphoria Morning: I love Soundgarden, but I didn’t know which album to chose from them. I went with Chris Cornell’s solo debut instead. It’s just a great album, I don’t think that I couldn’t be somewhere without it.

Must have tracks: “Can’t Change Me”, “When I’m Down”, “Sweet Euphoria”.

7. R.E.M. - Automatic for the People: A bit cliche, but that’s because this album is that good. It also has the unfortunate privilege of being the last album Kurt Cobain listened to.

Must have tracks: One of the best 1-2-3 album openers: “Drive”, “Try Not To Breathe”, “The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite”.

6. Alice in Chains - Unplugged: AIC did Unplugged almost perfectly. Of course there were flaws, but the band sounded great overall and they laughed off their mistakes. This has to be one of the best Unplugged performances ever.

Must have tracks: “Nutshell”, “Sludge Factory”, “Over Now”.

5. Pearl Jam - Vs.: Some may argue that this is Pearl Jam’s best album, which doesn’t matter, because it’s a solid album. It’s Pearl Jam’s most attainable and the production makes it that much better. It’s defiantly an essential in any 90’s collection.

Must have tracks: The entire album!

4. Radiohead - OK Computer: Another cliche choice, but once again, it’s because it’s that good. I really don’t think that I need to elaborate on the brillance of OK Computer.

Must have tracks: “Paranoid Android”, “Exit Music (For A Film), “Let Down”.

3. Jeff Buckley - Grace: One of the greatest albums ever.

Must have tracks: “Lover, You Should Have Come Over”, “Eternal Life”, “Grace”.

2. Stone Temple Pilots - Tiny Music…Songs From the Vatican Gift Shop: Most people may state that Purple is STP’s best album, but I disagree. Tiny Music showcases the band’s true abilities and pushed their limits. It’s this album where STP broke away from being labeled as a “grunge” rip off band.

Must have tracks: “Adhesive”, “And So I Know”, “Seven Caged Tigers”.

1. Pearl Jam - Yield: This is my favorite Pearl Jam album. It blends the straight forward powerhouse that Pearl Jam is known for, with some music that have fans scratching their heads.

Must have tracks: Yeah, the entire album.

You did a list! And as noted, the Pearl Jam is indeed a shock. Good choice on the Unplugged AIC. I thought you might pick that STP too. I don’t know about #7 — but I did not know that Kurt Cobain factoid. Where is that from? Good list overall though. You could come along with the rest of us to the island. Well, the rest of the channel minus me; I don’t do boats thus no shipwreck in my future.

    E, you’re lucky there wasn’t more PJ!

The thing about Kurt and Automatic for the People is from his biography Heavier Than Heaven.

I’m so glad that I’m worthy of getting stuck on an island with everyone, even though I’m not fond of hot weather.
