The Verve reunited last year and this year they’re staying on the road with some big-time gigs, like Coachella and Glastonbury. The band is also working on a new album, so it’s a great time for an FYI on The Verve.
The band formed in 1989 at Winstanley Sixth Form College.
The band consisted of Richard Ashcroft (vocals), Nick McCabe (guitar), Simon Jones (bass), Peter Salisbury (drums).
In 1991 the band signed to Hut Records (a British subsidiary of Virgin who licensed a little band known as the Smashing Pumpkins).
1992 the band issued their first releases: “All in the Mind”, “She’s A Superstar”, the Gravity Grave EP and the U.S. released Verve EP.
A Storm in Heaven, the band’s full length album debut, was released in June, 1993.
The single “Slide Away” gave the band some popularity in the U.S. indie charts, which lead to a spot at 1994’s Lollapalooza (The Smashing Pumpkins, The Beastie Boys, George Clinton, The Flaming Lips, The Black Crowes, and Green Day were also on the tour).
The soundtrack for 1993’s Sliver features the track “Star Sail”.
The band had to legally change their name from Verve to The Verve after being sued for trademark infringement by Verve Records in 1994.
The band’s second album, A Northern Soul, was released in the U.S. on June 20, 1995.
During the recording of the album, the band was taking lots of ecstasy.
The single “History” features clapping by Liam Gallagher of Oasis.
Richard Ashcroft disbands The Verve during 1996, only to reform the band a few weeks later.
Guitarist Simon Tong replaces Nick McCabe, who returns in 1997.
Urban Hymns is released on September 29, 1997.
“Bitter Sweet Symphony” was the first single and is known for sampling “The Last Time” by the Rolling Stones, which went to court and was settled.
The song was also used in a Nike commercial and the flick Cruel Intentions.
The single “Lucky Man” would be used in the film The Girl Next Door and U2 frontman Bono stated that it was one of the songs that he wished he had written within the last 2o years.
After touring in 1997-1998, the band split up in April of 1999.
On June 26, 2007 the band’s reunion was announced on BBC Radio 1, but without Simon Tong.
