FYI: The Cranberries

by acostill on November 16th, 2007

We always need some sort of Cranberries to go with Turkey Day next week.

  • The Cranberries are all from outside Limerick, Ireland.
  • The band formed in 1990, after Noel Hogan (guitar), Mike Hogan (bass) and Fergal Lawlor met singer Dolores O’Riordon through mutual friends.
  • The boys original name for the band was Cranberry Saw Us.
  • “Linger” was the first song written by the band.
  • Nothing Left At All was the band’s 6 track demo tape in late 1990.
  • In 1991 The Cranberries inked a deal with Island Records; which is also the home of another Irish band called U2.
  • The band’s debut single, “Uncertain”, was met with harsh reactions from the music industry in 1991.
  • “Dreams” was released as a single in the fall of 1992.
  • The band’s debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?” was released in March 0f 1993.
  • After completing work on their follow up album, the band took a ski trip to France; Dolores, unfortunately, fell and severely damaged her right knee.
  • No Need To Argue was released in October of 1994 and would go on to sell around 16 million copies.
  • “Zombie” was the lead single for the album and was written about two children who died from an IRA bomb in Britain.
  • Throughout the band’s career, they toured with The Verve, Duran Duran, Belly and one of their influences R.E.M.
  • In 1995, over 10,000 people showed up at the Washington Mall when word spread that the Cranberries would be doing a free Unplugged performance there. D.C. police were then forced to cancel the show because of lack of security.
  • In the fall of 1995, the band recorded To The Faithful Departed in five weeks.
  • The album was released in April of 1996 and went on to sell over 6 million copies.
  • “Salvation” was the lead single and hit number one on the Billboard US Modern Rock Tracks.
  • The band recorded “Go Your Own Way” for a tribute album to Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours.
  • The Cranberries performed live for the first time in two years at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Norway. They perform “Dreams” and a new tune, “Promises”.
  • Bury The Hatchet was released in April of 1999 and sold 2 million copies in it’s first month.
  • Wake Up and Smell the Coffee was released in October of 2001.
  • Stars: The Best of 1992-2002 was released in the fall of 2002, which contains two new tracks, “New New York” and “Stars”.
  • In 2003, the Cranberries announced their hiatus and the members are currently working on individual projects.
  • I have to thank the band’s official site for most of this info.
