Smells Like Alternative

Back to School List

by acostill on September 5th, 2007

I’m a sucker for themes, so let’s stick with the back to school thing.

I decided to change up this week’s Song of the Week to Songs of the Week. Ok, how about a list of back to school songs, 90’s style.

Nirvana - “School”: This is from their 1989 debut, Bleach. I still love the simple lyrics and Kurt screaming “no recess”.

Class of ‘99 - “Another Brick in the Wall”: This was a brief supergroup consisting of Layne Staley (Alice in Chains), Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine), Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction) and Matryn LeNoble (Porno For Pyros) for the forgettable 1998 horror flick The Faculty. These guys do Pink Floyd proud.

Nada Surf - “Popular”: - Ah yes, wasn’t this what high school was all about?

The Deftones - “Back to School (Mini Maggot)”: - This should get you going in the morning.

Barenaked Ladies - “Grade 9″: I think this pretty much covers the first day of high school.

Primus - “Mrs. Blaileen”: Poor, poor Donny. I guess he was out of his element (hope you caught that Big Lebowski reference).

Belle & Sabastian - “Expectations”: I think we’ve all been here before towards the end or after high school.

Pearl Jam - “Jeremy”: I don’t think I need to elaborate on this one. I just hope that we’ve learned some things from all the horrible school tragedies.

Billy Madison - “Back to School”: I couldn’t end on a downer.

And please, if you have any suggestions to more songs, I’m all about comments.
