New Release Tuesaday: Candlebox, Nine Inch Nails, Beck

Another Tuesday, which means another set of new releases.
Candlebox returns with their first studio album in ten years. Now, I was never a huge Candlebox fan, but any band that managed to survive the 90’s is alright in my book. The new album, entitled Into The Sun, will probably grab the attention of most 90’s fans. I don’t know if I’ll pick it up, but if you want a review wait for Scott over at The Rock Dose to deliver one.
Here’s an acoustic, live performance of the first single “Stand”.

Liz Phair Adds Three East Coast Dates

Liz Phair Adds Three East Coast Dates

Liz Phair has already hit New York, Chicago and San Fran in support of the 15th Anniversary reissue of her breakthrough album Exit From Guyville.
Phair has now added three more dates to celebrate her 1993 debut, which include:
8/27 in Philadelphia at the Theater of the Living Arts
8/28 in Washington, DC at the 9:30 Club
8/29 in Boston at The Paradise
The shows will feature Phair performing Exit To Guyville in it’s entirety, which seems pretty cool to me.
If you’re not sure about going to one of these shows then check out a review from Rolling Stone.
Enjoy the video for “Never Said”.

It Doesn’t Smell Like Alternative Anymore

It Doesn’t Smell Like Alternative Anymore

Last week I received the news that b5 was retiring this site, as well as, several other great music blogs here. The company has to do what they have to and basically trim the fat. So, once July is over, so is this site.
It’s been a blast working here and sharing some of my favorite music with people from all over the place. I guess it’s true what they say, nothing good lasts forever.
However, I will be heading over to Evolvor to keep doing what I am doing, it may not be exactly the same, but it’s better than …read more

Billy Corgan Makes Frances Bean Cobain Cry

Billy Corgan Makes Frances Bean Cobain Cry

I usually I don’t post about these silly gossip stories, but this is just funny; since it makes my man Billy Corgan look like a jerk.
Here’s what’s going on between the friends and collaborators, which is according to Courtney Love. Alright, maybe this needs some verification, but let’s roll with it.
Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love’s only child Frances Bean is turning 16, which means that she’s having a Sweet 16 party, with a performance by My Chemical Romance. Oh the joy!
Anyways, Corgan will not be attending the festivities, which supposedly made Frances Bean cry, which in turn ticked off Courtney, …read more

Redemption Song

Redemption Song

I know this is a 90’s related blog, we’ll get to why this song ties into the 90’s in a moment, but this is one of my favorite Bob Marley tunes. Yes, it’s a bit played out, but none the less a beautiful piece of music.
And, for some reason, I’ve been listening to “Redemption Song” a lot lately. Maybe because of the lines “Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds”. Man, gives me chills just typing out the words.
“Redemption Song” appears as the last track on Marley’s final studio album, which was from 1980’s Uprising. …read more

VH1 Rock Honors: The Who & Sub Pop 20th Bash

VH1 Rock Honors: The Who & Sub Pop 20th Bash

The west coast got lots of action this past weekend by some of my favorite 90’s acts, so let’s have a quick wrap up of the festivities.
On Saturday night, July 12, VH1 honored legendary rockers The Who with performances by the Foo Fighters, the Flaming Lips, Incubus, Tenacious D, Pearl Jam and of course The Who at the Pauley Pavilion on the campus of UCLA in L.A . There were also a slew of celebrities at the event, which also raised over a million bucks for various charities.
Foo Fighters kicked the night off with their renditions of “Young …read more

Since Beck just released Modern Guilt, and celebrated a birthday this week, it only makes sense that we do an FYI on Mr. Hansen.

Bek David Campbell, aka Beck Hansen, was born on July 8 1970 in Los Angeles, CA.
His father David Campbell, who is a Canadian musician, wrote the string arrangements for Stone Temple Pilots’ Storytellers.
His mother, Bibbe Hansen, worked with Andy Warhol in Prison, Restaurant, 10 Beautiful Girls and 10 More Beautiful Girls.
