FYI: Matthew Sweet
Apparently the man behind the classic track ”Girlfriend” is coming out with a new album sometime this year.
- In 1983, Sweet left Lincoln, NE for the Athens, GA; he teamed up with a guy named Michael Stipe for the project Community Trolls.
- In 1985, Sweet signs a record deal with Columbia.
- Columbia dropped Sweet after his 1986 debut Inside flopped commercially.
- A&M picked up Sweet and released 1989’s Earth, to limited success.
- In 1990 Sweet was dumped by A&M, so he signs with Zoo Entertainment.
- On October 22, 1991 Sweet releases a little album entitled Girlfriend, I bet Columbia and A&M felt foolish.
- The album was originally entitled
- “Girlfriend” hit #4 on the Modern Rock Charts and is currently featured on Guitar Hero II.
- The track “I’ve Been Waiting” has been featured on one of my favorite shows, Scrubs.
- Altered Beast was released on July 13, 1993 and failed to match the success of Girlfriend.
- The title for the album is from a Sega Genesis game.
- Mic Fleetwood makes an appearance on Altered Beast.
- Sweet covered the Scooby-Doo theme for the compilation album Saturday Morning.
- On March 14, 1995 100% Fun is released.
- The title is taken from a line in Kurt Cobain’s suicide note.
- The track “Sick of Myself” is kick a** song.
- On March 25, 1997 Blue Sky on Mars is released.
- Also in 1997, Sweet was part of the fictional band Ming Tea in Austin Powers, with Mike Myers and Susanna Hoffs.
- October 12, 1999 In Reverse is released through Volcano Records.
- 2003’s Kimi Ga Suki was originally released as thank you to Japanese fans, but eventually saw a U.S. release.
- Sweet releases Living Things in 2004.
- In 2006 Sweet teamed up with Susanna Hoffs for an album of covers, cleverly entitled Under The Covers, Vol.
