The Biggest Disappointments of 2007
2007 was a pretty decent year for 90’s alternative bands, but with the good comes the bad. So, here are the five biggest disappointments of 2007.
5. Chris Cornell – Carry On. I love pretty much anything that Chris Cornell does, minus the last two Audioslave albums, so I was thrilled when I heard that he was releasing his second solo album. Euphoria Morning is still one of my all time favorite albums, so my expectations were high. Carry On does have a handful of decent tracks, like “Arms Around Your Arm” and “Killing Birds”, but as whole it just didn’t sit well with me. Cornell can do much better than this. The positive aspect of Carry On was Cornell’s awesome shows in support of it.
4. Green Day performing “Working Class Hero” on American Idol.Ok, Green Day should never be associated with American Idol let alone covering this John Lennon classic. Even after the May season finale of Idol I’m still shocked that the trio agreed to go on this bogus show. I bet Lennon would ask them “How do you sleep at night?”.
3. Scott Weiland charged with a DUI. The former STP and current Velvet Revolver frontman was arrested on November 21 after getting into an accident and has since been formally charged with a DUI. Most of us know that Weiland has had a history of addiction problems, and besides the STP haters, most of us are pulling for him. Weiland is one of the best frontman around and is actually a great musician, it would be a shame to see him lose this battle. On a personal note, Weiland has a wife and two children, it would be a shame to lose them (or for them to lose him). So, it was a bit disturbing when I heard this news; let’s hope he get pull through this.
2. AT&T censoring Pearl Jam during Lollapalooza webcast.AT&T was nice enough to sponsor a live webcast of Lollapalooza for those of us not in attendance. Everything was fine until Vedder began to mock President Bush during “Daughter/Another Brick In The Wall”. During Pearl Jam’s performance the webcast went out for a bit during said song, which ticked a lot of fans off. They notified the band and suddenly it became a big story. At first AT&T denied that the censorship was intentional, but later on admitted it was true. This issue became more than one band being censored; it became an issue of free speech for all of us in America.
1. The Smashing Pumpkins reuniting. This “reunion” only consists of Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, so basically it’s just Corgan’s post Pumpkins project Zwan. I know some feel that Corgan is the band, but without D’arcy and James Iha, the Pumpkins are missing a lot. Their comeback album Zeitgeist was pretty much a joke and forced us all to once again hear Corgan’s whiny voice through the speakers. Why couldn’t he just go quietly into the night?

Zeitgeist is exactly what everybody expected, you’re the only one who thinks is a joke. You know what’s a joke? Your formatting and editing, now that’s a fing joke.
Scottie getting a DUI isn’t a disappointment, it’s part of his rocstardom – Scott wouldn’t be scott without doing drugs and getting into trouble!
You getting paid to kiss up to Billy now?
Zeitgeist was a joke because it sounds very similiar to the Zwan project, which didn’t sell to good, so Billy (with his ego and all) couldn’t take the fact that no one cared about him anymore, so he tells his partner in crime (Jimmy Chamberlin) that he’s going to bring back the Pumpkins. Since the album was by the “Smashing Pumpkins” people cared about it and Billy could fill his ego again, plus he fould people like you that this was the return of the Pumpkins, but it’s actually Zwan with a Pumpkins label. Take off the blind fold man.
fould people?
Oh I totally agree with you man. He never should have created the Zwan thing, should just kept on truckin as the Pumpkins. Corgan is the pumpkins. There’s no blind fold. I’m just saying that I dig the new album. It’s simple, 90’s flavored Pumpkins. Just what everybody wants from them. I could care less about the politics man. Who gives a shit? Big deal so he’s filling his ego. He’s ALWAYS filled his ego, that’s part of being Billy. Why are we acting like this is something new? Screw politics, screw whatever reasoning is behind it, all I wanted was some music to bang my head to, and they delivered.
Man, don’t get started on spelling mistakes. I mean what’s a fing?
Anyways, I want to bang my head to Zeitgeist too, except into a wall because it’s so terrible.
Billy has had an ego and it the main part of the Pumpkins, but we don’t need to fill that ego up just because he brings back the Pumpkins. I think it could have been better if James Iha came back too. The new album just is missing a lot lyrically and musically.
