FYI: The Black Crowes

A day late, but still good, let’s check out an FYI on the Atlanta natives.

  • The band formed in 1984 under the name Mr. Crowes Garden.
  • In 1989 the band recorded a demo that would eventually land them a deal with Rick Rubin’s American Recordings.
  • Their debut album, Shake Your Money Maker, was released in January 1990 and would go on to sell over 3 million copies.
  • To support Shake Your Money Maker the band opened up for ZZ Top, but were fired after making sarcastic remarks about commercialism, since the tour was sponsored by Miller Beer.
  • In August of 1990, the band was part of the Monsters of Rock Tour in Moscow with AC/DC, Metallica, EST and Pantera.
  • The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion was released on May 12, 1992.
  • In 2006, Guitar World ranked Southern Harmony #100 in the 100 greatest guitar albums.
  • The band became a 6 piece when keyboardist Eddie Harsch joined the band on the “High As The Moon Tour”.
  • In 1993 the band recorded Tall, which was scrapped for the Amorica album.
  • The Crowes released Amorica on November 1, 1994.
  • The controversial album cover for Amorica is from the U.S. Bicentennial issue of Hustler from 1976.
  • On April 7, 1995 the Crowes opened up for the Grateful Dead in Tampa, FL.
  • On July 23, 1996 the bands fourth album, Three Snakes and One Charm was released.
  • By Your Side was released on January 12, 1999 through Columbia Records.
  • In October of 1999 the band teamed up with Jimmy Page for a 2 night stand at the Greek Theatre in L.A., which would be released as Live at the Greek on July 4, 2000. Due to contractual problems, the Crowes songs that were performed were unable to be released.
  • On May 8, 2001 Lions was released through V2 Records.
  • In May/June of 2001 The Black Crowes teamed up with Oasis and Spacehog for the Tour of Brotherly Love, since all 3 bands have brothers in them.
  • The Crowes reassembled in 2005 and would team up with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers for their summer tour.
  • The Black Crowes have announced that they have recorded a new album, which plans to be released in Spring of 2008.
