FYI: Pearl Jam

FYI: Pearl Jam

Welcome to the first edition of FYI Friday, which means I’ll be sharing some knowledge about everything related to the 90’s alternative scene that you may or may not already know, but it should be an educational experience for us all.
Let’s kick off with a band  that I mentioned earlier this week (and one of my favorites), PEARL JAM!

Before they were known as Pearl Jam the band called themselves Mookie Blaylock. Mookie Blaylock was an All-Star Basketball player for the New Jersey Nets, Atlanta Hawks and Golden State Warriors. Pearl Jam’s title for their debut album Tenwas Blaylock’s jersey number.
Original Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer, Jack …read more

Sirius Satellite’s Lithium Channel

Sirius Satellite’s Lithium Channel

I stumbled across this channel a couple of months ago and was very excited at what I heard. It’s still a new channel, but I’m hooked. Lithium plays all 90’s alternative music from the heavy hitters, like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, STP, RHCP, Radiohead, etc., to some of the forgotten bands, such as Silverchair, The Toadies, The Butthole Surfers, Cake, The Verve, etc. Here’s what I love about this channel, and Sirius as well.
1. Diversity. Lithium plays every sort of “alternative” music from the 90’s, they could play Soundgarden followed by 311, then Denis Leary’s “Asshole” and then “God” from Tori Amos.
2. Better song …read more

Velvet Revolver/Alice in Chains Tour

Velvet Revolver/Alice in Chains Tour

Maybe most of you have heard that Velvet Revolver and Alice in Chains will be touring together this summer. Personally, I can’t wait to see this show. Two great bands in one night, it’s gonna rock, and somehow I was fortunate enough to get pit seats! I know that some people have some concerns with these bands, so I want to share why this tour is worth catching.
Let’s start with Velvet Revolver, who will release their sophomore album Libertad on July 3. The supergroup consist of Guns ‘N’ Roses alum Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum and former Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott …read more

Pearl Jam – Severed Hand (Song of the Week)

Pearl Jam – Severed Hand (Song of the Week)

I’ve chosen Pearl Jam’s “Severed Hand” for song of the week, because I just saw a TV ad for their new box set, Live at the Gorge 05/06, and they played a live version of “Severed Hand”. It reminded how awesome this song is and I immediately had to listen to it.
I first heard this song in April 2006 in a Montreal hotel room when Pearl Jam was on Saturday Night Live; I had to leave the next morning so I had to call it an early night . Anyways, I was instantly hooked when I heard the opening guitar. …read more

Pearl Jam – Live at the Gorge 05/06

Pearl Jam – Live at the Gorge 05/06

Pearl Jam’s decision to release a 7-disc box set from their Gorge, WA shows from 2005 and 2006 stirs up mixed emotions. As a fan, I look forward to any Pearl Jam release and a box set should have me skipping around. The setlists from these shows make me kick myself for not making the trip across the States to Seattle. The shows include the usual suspects of hits that include “Black”, “Given To Fly”, “Even Flow”, “Corduroy”, “Better Man”, “Alive” and “Yellow Ledbetter”. Not to mention gems such as “Low Light”, “Sad”, “Insignificance”, “Leash”, “Satan’s Bed”, “God’s Dice” and …read more
